Who's for a day at the seaside?! Alnmouth is renowned for it's beautiful sandy beach. As the Good Beach Guide puts it, "A quiet sandy beach set in a wide bay. A beautiful rural setting away from the hustle and bustle and with plenty of bird watching opportunities along the sand dunes."
As it's name testifies, the village sits at the mouth of the River Aln as it meets the North Sea. Meaning that the village also boasts some wonderful river-side walks. This picturesque estuary is a favoured location for photographers looking to capture a perfect sunset photograph.
For the more sport minded, Alnmouth boasts not one but two golf courses in the shape of the Alnmouth Village Golf Club formed in 1869 it is the oldest 9 hole links golf club in England. Then there is the Alnmouth Golf Club which is located at Foxton Hall on the outskirts of the village. Both clubs offer visitor passes for singles or groups.
If golf is a bit pedestrian for you, Alnmouth bay has become popular with surfers and kite surfers when the conditions are right providing some spectacular entertainment for participants and spectators alike.
The River Aln is also a significant river for migratory sea trout and salmon and some impressive catches have been made both in the estuary area as well as further up river. Please note that while fishing either in the sea or in the estuary up to the bridge into the village does not require a rod license nor permit, fishing in the river above the bridge will require a rod license in addition to a permit issued by the owners of the angling rights. A visit to the Hardy Fishing Tackle Museum and Shop located on the outskirts of Alnwick would be well worth a trip for any angler and the knowledgeable staff will be able to point you in the right direction with regard to day tickets and tackle advice.
Alnwick is also the location of the famous Alnwick Garden as well as Alnwick Castle - the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland but probably more famous as being one of the main locations for Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter movies!
There are also numerous other pretty and character full villages and market towns all within easy travelling distance from Alnmouth. From traditional fishing villages up the coast at Craster and Seahouses to those further inland such as Rothbury, Morpeth and Berwick upon Tweed. It's a place to explore and unwind with surprises and hidden gems along the way.
